Project Main Details

Prince Spider Character for Educational App
Overview of the Project – the App seeks to teach young children (ages 3 – 6) how to behave appropriately when with their peers. The App is based on an existing video title that uses video modeling, a proven therapeutic methodology, to help teach young children how to behave appropriately, solve problems, make good decisions and properly communicate with their friends and other peers in common social scenarios and settings. In the existing video, there are 16 scenarios in which child actors are first shown making an incorrect choice and exhibiting negative behaviors, which results in appropriate consequences. The video then helps teach how to make a good choice in that scenario by modeling appropriate, positive behaviors. Lessons focus on common behavior problems for children, such as strategies to resolve conflicts with peers without resorting to tantrums, name calling or physical violence; self-management and dealing with anger and frustration in a positive fashion; sharing and taking turns with friends; being a good sport; telling the truth; bullying; not interrupting; and being nice to friends and not taunting, and encouraging friends who are less competent instead of teasing. The App turns the existing video into an interactive experience by requiring the user to make good choices when presented by common issues, by rewarding the user if they choose correctly, and if the user chooses the wrong answer, explaining why it is the wrong answer and offering guidance.

Prince Spider is an animated character developed for and used in the existing video that is being made into an interactive experience by this App. The voice talent that did the original work for the video is not available to reprise his role. We’re looking for a close approximation of the original voice work – here is a link to scenes from the video: The character is a supporting character that interacts with the main Narrator to move the user through each story (scene).

Technical – recorded 16 bit mono, encoded as LEI16 (little-endian integer 16-bit linear PCM), 48 kHz (not 44.1 kHz) sample rate, packaged in a Core Audio File Format (.caf) container. Files to be uploaded via Dropbox, using a common file naming convention that ties to the script which is presented in “nodes” which roughly equate to one line of dialog (which unfortunately has to be in Word, not Final Draft or equivalent, for issues relating to programming). For example, the file for the line of dialog contained in Node 187 of the regular difficulty level (B) of Story 12 would be “story12_b187.caf”). In some cases, to save space and reduce the overall size of the App, the same lines will be reused within the same Story or even across multiple Stories; those lines are marked with an “*” in the script and are not highlighted.

Availability for Pickups – talent should be available for pickups from April 8 – 19.

SPIDER VO: “You’re doing totally awesome on this one! You figured out that Jesse’s mom is feeling mad about the way Jesse is acting, and that Jesse’s mom is thinking Jesse better start listening to her. So – what do you think Jesse’s mom will probably *do* now that Jesse made the wrong choice? What do you think will happen to Jesse?”

SPIDER VO: “You can choose either … the mom will make Jesse his favorite dessert as a reward for listening and making good choices … or you can choose … the mom will put Jesse in a time out so that he can think about what he did and can make a good choice next time.

SPIDER VO: “Oh, no, that’s not the right answer based on what we saw. … Let’s go back and watch it again. … This time, try to think what it is more likely Jesse’s mom will do after he makes a wrong choice. Let’s try again!”

SPIDER VO: “Correct-a-mundo! After Jesse didn’t listen and talked back, Jesse’s mom is more likely to put him in a time out, because she doesn’t want to reward him for not making good choices. While he’s in a time out, Jesse can think about his choices and why they weren’t good choices. Then the next time, Jesse can make a good choice.”
