Smoking prevalence and income are directly related. This bar graph depicts data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a survey that is conducted nationally every few years. This data represents 2004 national smoking prevalence by income.
Here, we can see that the current adult smoking prevalence rate is approximately 20%. Notice the higher smoking prevalence among persons who have annual incomes below $15,000. For persons with annual incomes above $50,000, the smoking prevalence rate is actually below the national average atonly 15%.
Therefore, the majority of smokers in the United States are persons living at or below the federal poverty level.
