Project Main Details
Gregg: age 55, about 1400 words.
Ralph: a young college senior, about 550 words.
This is a sample cut directly from the manuscript. Read the whole sample in order to get the drama of what’s happening, but then record ONLY the spoken dialog for your particular character. I need a clean recording with very little background noise. It should be in mono.
Don’t try to sound like a “news man” with a “personality.” That just sounds superficial, bright, and false. Instead we want you to really become the character, to become conversational and “humanly flawed.” It’s important that the character be believable as a common, speaking human being. Polished delivery of lines is less important.
Thank you very much for doing the audition. It’s appreciated.

“But wouldn’t that be like prostitution?”
“Hell no. She’d be doing it because she wanted to do it. Or not at all.”
Then Peter Dunbar said, “And we’re planning to make this happen by offering to pay her college tuition. Is that right? I don’t think it’s realistic.”
Gregg said, “We want a girl that’s gonna be devoted to us, to the five of us. Isn’t that what you guys want? Free ******for the rest of your days. Is that what you guys want? That’s what you said you wanted.”
There were looks and nods around the table. Peter uncovered the steaming-hot bread and the goat cheese. Gregg continued, “And you said you could make that happen, Elliot, right? Is that right?”
I answered as best I could: “I said I would try to make it happen. But I think the important thing is for you guys to make up your mind what you want. We’re gonna share this girl, right? Are you guys cool with that? One girl for all five of us? How’s that gonna work? Suppose I can find the girl we are looking for. And suppose she’s hot and sweet. Then suppose one of us sees her making out with somebody else. Gordon, suppose you fall in love with this girl, and you see her making out with me – are you gonna get shook up?”
He grins and shakes his head ‘no’. But I know damn well what would happen. Gordon is in his seventies. He’s a romantic sort of fellow. I know what would happen.
The conversation goes on for a while -- pros and cons about the scheme. Questions about how am I gonna do it. How am I gonna approach a girl and all that sort of stuff. Then Gregg asks me, “What’s in it for you, Elliot? Are you doing this for us, or do you want in on the deal?”
“I wouldn’t mind having a young girl I could spank once in a while.” I grin, but they all know I’m serious.
Then Peter says, “That’s your kink, isn’t it, Elliot? I guess we gotta put up with your kink, don’t we.”
I replied, “We’ve all got baggage of one kind or another. We’re gonna have to deal. There’s no getting around it.”
Some of this talk was just good fun, but underneath, it was deadly serious. I knew that these issues were gonna come out sooner or later. Better sooner in the talking stage. Most of these men had almost no experience. They probably had never even seen a fellow human being in the sexual act. Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to think that they were not capable. They were very capable. Several had accomplished great things with their lives.
The meeting broke up, and they all went home. All except Jack Means. Jack stayed and played a game of chess with me as was our custom. He was very good. He beat me as he always does. And then he helped me put away the food, and we locked up.
I went home to my apartment on Water Street. It’s on the fourth floor of an old industrial building. It’s a little bit lonesome there, but not bad. I’ve got it fixed up nicely now. I was tempted to fix myself a drink, but I made coffee instead. I don’t drink much anymore since my divorce. I own the building. It used to be called the Giant Store. There’s a great smokestack rising sixty feet above the top of the building. There’s a good elevator goes up to the fourth floor. My windows look out over the river. It’s lonesome, but I’m getting used to it. I was married for over thirty years. I can’t figure out why I ever stayed married that long. But anyway, that’s all history now.
I needed to have a talk with Ralph. He was working the third shift that night. I set my alarm for 3:00 AM and drifted off to sleep. When the alarm went off, I got up and made another cup of coffee. I put on my coat and walked down to the mill. Ralph was sitting on a metal chair in the vat room with his books and papers spread out on a card table. There was a young woman sitting there on a chair beside him with some sort of a text book opened up in her lap. I did not recognize her as being someone on the night-shift crew.
Ralph looked up. “Hi, Mr. Porter,” he said. “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I’ve got something I want to talk to you about.”
“Sure, what’s up? This is my girlfriend, Eva Santini.” The young woman folded her text book with a finger in the page where she had been studying. She stood and extended a hand to me. I greeted her, and we had a few words of polite conversation.
I gestured in the direction of the board room. “Let’s go in here, Ralph.” He followed me in, and we sat down.
“Your girlfriend is cute, Ralph. And she’s up ‘till 3:00 AM studying with you and keeping you company. You’re a lucky fellow.”
“I am a lucky fellow. We’re gonna get married next summer. What is it you wanna talk about, Mr. Porter?”
“You know, I trust you, Ralph. I count on you. And I think you have good judgment about where discretion is called for.” He nodded. “The business of the Snowshoe Club is very private, but you are going to learn more and more about it as we go along.” He nodded again. “We’re looking for a woman, a young woman that we can have sex with. I mean to say, the club is looking, not just me. Do you know of a girl -- perhaps over there at UNH -- a sexy girl that you might introduce me to?”
“Well, I know some different girls over there.”
“Our idea is to find a girl that we could share among ourselves. Maybe help her out – pay her tuition or something like that.” He just gave me a non-committal look. He seemed to take it in stride – not particularly surprised or anything like that.
“Well, there’s a girl I know, Sylvia Levesque. She’s a senior. She’s sexy as hell.” He looked at me. I nodded. He continued, “I’ve known her since we were kids. We grew up in Newmarket.”
“Is she good looking?”
“Yeah, she’s cute – maybe a little overweight for my taste, but definitely cute, good looking.” He looked at me.
I nodded. “Yes, go on.”
“She’s a little bit kinky.”
“She’s an exhibitionist. She likes to take chances. We used to play pirate games when we were kids. Tie each other up and stuff like that. Me and her and Eva and some other kids – we used to make believe the girls were our captured booty, and we were gonna ransom them for pieces-of-eight.”
