Penumbra Clarence

General Plotting Background:
Our player character, Philip, has journeyed into a research base deep beneath the Greenland snow, looking for his father, a world class linguist. The research base was installed by a shady organisation which seeks to find and secure alien evidence on earth – his father worked for them. One year ago, and alien virus infected most of the staff on the base – the virus is sentient, and operates as a hive mind. Most humans have been killed or converted, and only a few survive by the time Philip arrives. Philip becomes infected, and is contacted by a Dr Swanson, who is trapped in another part of the base, but has information on a cure.

Name: Clarence
Sex: male
Accent: Well spoken English, but not posh. Very smooth, almost charming / slimey.
Age: n/a

Clarence is the personification of a sentient viral infection, and our lead character. The player character, Philip, is infected with an alien virus, and, when it fails to destroy him entirely, it is forced to share his mind with him. The virus is somewhat of a warped version of the host it infects – every aspect of its character is a cracked mirror to the character of its host.

As the virus takes hold, it gradually begins to communicate with Philip, taking on a stronger persona, and gaining more power over his senses. It searches Philip’s memories, and comes across a name for itself – Clarence, named after the guardian angel in the film ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’.

Clarence is sarcastic, and bitter at what he considers to be his mental prison. He is scared of being disconnected from the ‘viral community’, and annoyed that he has only limited control over his future. Without complete control, Clarence feels weak, and angry. His character is taunting, aggressive, but ultimately, resigned to his fate. Despite the fact that he hates Philip, he also knows that he relies on him for survival. He is deceptive, and amoral. He can be brash, playful (in a disturbing sort of way), comedic. In fact, though he is a thoroughly despicable character, and for all intents and purposes, the main bad guy, he should remain likeable. For better or for worse, Philip and Clarence are tied together.

I’d very much encourage any actor to follow up their own interpretation of the character. What’s important is that we capture Clarence’s intelligence, his (pitch back) sense of humour, his arrogance, and his deceptive (yet incorrigible) nature. I would position him with a reasonably well spoken (as in eloquent, not posh) English accent.

Approx air time: 15-20 mins

Usage of voice: Computer game in the horror genre, not very violent rather atmosphere and puzzles as its main elements.

Auditioning script:

Pick one, do two or do all, as you please!

1. Desc: Clarence has only just become self aware (he’s just been born) and is in the process of selecting a name for himself. ‘Monkey’ refers to Philip.

-If we must continue to share this brain space, I think I should have a name. Strange – so rare an opportunity to select one’s own nomenclature, and yet, I find myself at a loss. Any ideas, monkey?

2. Desc: Player picks up an old rusty saw.

-Mmm... there’s something about a rusty saw that just makes me purr. Had a Tetanus jab recently?

3. Desc: Player discovers his own father’s corpse. A sad moment for the character, which is mercilessly mocked by Clarence for his own amusement.

-[Melodramatically] Oh my god... he’s DEAD! Quick, if he hasn’t started to smell, give him the kiss of life!
