Contact with a passenger car usually occurs at leg level first, because the bumper is usually 16 to 18 inches off the ground. When struck below the navel, the adult pedestrian’s lower body moves away from the vehicle and the upper body rotates towards the auto. If the car is traveling at more than a nominal speed, the pedestrian falls onto the hood of the car, perhaps striking the windshield with the head.
