Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Considerations

Resuscitation is not an effective end-of-life treatment given that the likelihood of achieving the physiologic goal of restoring circulatory function is extremely low when the cessation of cardiac function is the consequence of a overwhelming burden of relentless terminal process. When looking at cardiopulmonary resuscitation in terminally ill patients there is essentially a 0% possibility that not only the circulation will be restored but that the patients lives long enough to be discharged from the hospital.
Therefore discuss this with patients and families and if in appropriate in Hospital enter DNR order or if at home complete out-of-Hospital DNR

Now to some terminology differences:

DNR - Do Not Resuscitate – Implies that successful resuscitate is possible yet choosing not to do so
Therefore some people prefer the term Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR)
Or the term allow natural death (AND) because the reason the person is dying is their illness not the fact that resuscitation was not attempted.
