ANNCR VO: Diabetes. It’s one of the signature diseases of our time. Currently, diabetes afflicts 25.8 million people in the United States. That’s 8.3% of the population.
ANNCR VO: Unfortunately, being overweight can lead to diabetes. And diabetes is often a gateway to other problems. People with diabetes are at greater risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and nervous system damage.
ANNCR VO: Today, there’s new hope for those suffering with this pervasive disease: bariatric surgery. Evidence suggests it may be among the most effective treatments for type 2 diabetes – and helps improve and, in many cases resolve, hypertension, high cholesterol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obstructive sleep apnea.
ANNCR VO: What is bariatric surgery? It’s any procedure that restricts the size of a patient’s stomach. Some forms, like gastric bypass surgery, are major procedures and are reserved for very obese people. But others, like Puget Sound Bariatric’s Lapsleeve procedure, are much less invasive.
ANNCR VO: Unlike gastric bypass surgery, Lapsleeve is available to many patients who are not morbidly obese. In fact, a person with a BMI as low as 30 might qualify.
Lapsleeve procedure is performed in under an hour, so most patients are home the same day. It requires no rerouting of intestines, and no devices implanted. And post-surgery nutritional concerns are less than those for bypass patients.
ANNCR VO: The results of bariatric surgery can be startling. Diabetes sufferers who receive bariatric surgery have shown 86% improvement rates, and 76.8% remission.
They often see improvement in other areas, too, including hypertension, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. Even joint disease, asthma and infertility have been shown to improve.
ANNCR VO: And here at Puget Sound Bariatrics we have experienced remission rates of type II diabetes approaching 90%.
ANNCR VO: The evidence is extensive. Most studies show prevention, improvement or remission of type 2 diabetes after surgery with a relatively low rate of risk in appropriate patients.
Metabolic surgery may be the key to battling the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes, and surgery is becoming safer and safer.
ANNCR VO: Even more amazing…many people experience improvements as early as the day after surgery.
ANNCR VO: Simple, quick, effective. If you have concerns about diabetes, weight loss or other metabolic ailments, call Puget Sound Bariatric Center today.
