On average, a train starts moving every twelve seconds on ÖBB-Infrastruktur’s rail network, which spans approximately 5,000 kilometres of track. Railway operators rely on it to transport more than 210 million passengers and 100 million tonnes of goods every year, travelling a total of approximately 150 million train-kilometres. That’s ten times around the world each day. ÖBB-Infrastruktur plans, establishes and operates facilities for operational management, energy supply, data transfer and customer information. ÖBB-Infrastruktur’s operational management objective is a safe and reliable handling of rail traffic at low production costs. To ensure the traffic control of the future, we invest in modern operational control systems.
In the future, train and shunting movements will mostly run automatically. Modern systems control and monitor all elements for secure running tracks used for train and shunting operations, as well as customer information in the passenger stations. With the latest generation of electronic interlockings and remote control technology, it is possible to centralize the control and dispatching of railway traffic on larger control centres. High-performance data networks and information and communication systems provide the necessary foundation. With this modern system landscape, we lay the basis for economically efficient and reliable, highly secure operational management.
For operational management, we have created a sustainable structure. We concentrate the coordination of the rail traffic in the entire network, as well quality monitoring for operational management and information management at our national traffic management centre in Vienna. The operational control of rail traffic is handled by five operational control centres (OCC). More than 3,000 kilometres of track are controlled from the operational control centres located in Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Villach and Vienna. At theses facilities, specialists work at ergonomically equipped high-tech workplaces in the areas of control, dispatching, customer information and technical services. This guarantees an optimal coordination of workflows and ways of communication, even in the event of operating anomalies. Passenger and freight transportation customers benefit from this efficiently organized operational management.
In order to fulfil our customers’ high requirements, we invest in selected qualification measures. Excellent vocational training and continued education with special training modules ensure that our traffic handling experts can act with utmost confidence and security. Team work is another major success factor. Modern operational management systems support our employees in implementing operational processes. For our rail operations, which are constantly becoming denser and faster, this ensures more safety, greater punctuality and higher quality. With this overall package, ÖBB-Infrastruktur’s operational management makes an important contribution to safe, quick, punctual, environmentally friendly and cost-effective mobility and logistics offerings.
