On September 21, 2011, the New York Times reported that between 2007 and 2010 Moore County, North Carolina had the fifth largest increase in poverty nationwide among counties with a population of greater than 65,000. While the affluent resort destinations of Pinehurst and Southern Pines did not see a significant increase in poverty, already struggling families in Robbins were greatly impacted by the economic downturn.

As a result of the recession, many parents in Robbins have had their hours cut by their employers, as employers have hustled to manage the effects of the economic slowdown. As these parents were already earning minimum wage, these reductions have left families struggling to meet basic needs.

******(Please use paragraph below for audition)*************

All of our children are born with great potential, and they deserve the opportunity to realize their hopes and dreams. Although childhood is generally considered to be a time of joyful, carefree exploration, children living in poverty tend to spend less time finding out about the world around them and more time struggling to survive within it. If a child is concerned about whether they will have electricity for their home and food for their table, then how can they be expected to focus on academics?

While ****************************ranks 48th, ************************* ranks 1208 out of 1302 elementary schools in the state of North Carolina. Given these statistics, it is safe to say that poverty and its attendant risk factors are damaging to the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive well-being of children.

But there is HOPE. ..

Recognizing the need to support children in their education, the **************************************has been serving children in a free summer camp for the past eight years, and in after school for the past five years. We served over 300 children this past summer, and we currently serve 200 children in after school. Nonetheless, we recognize that we need to do more in order to impact outcomes for families living in poverty. We must end society’s cycle of blame and resignation and embrace a new mission to help all our students fulfill their full potential. Towards this end, we will launch our HOPE Project in September of 2014 by opening a four classroom preschool that will serve 96 three- and four-year old children and their families. Parents will volunteer in their child’s class on a regular basis, and will be afforded the opportunity to attend biweekly workshops designed to empower parents to be a strong partner in their child’s education. It is our goal to equip parents and families with the tools they need to help their children reach their full potential.
