It was about that time that a letter addressed to head coach John J. McEwan arrived at West Point. The letter was from a Nathan W. Dougherty postmarked Knoxville, Tennessee. The University of Tennessee needed an assistant football coach, and it also needed a military science instructor. Dougherty wrote to McEwan and asked if he could recommend a man for the job. McEwan wrote back that his Captain Neyland would be an excellent candidate.
Neyland decided to investigate the situation at Knoxville, and he made his way south to meet Nathan Dougherty. The two hit it off.
If he learned the history of Football at UT on that trip, he would have discovered that from its humble beginning 35 years before it had been something of a helter-skelter affair. The first teams (if you could call them that) would get together on short notice, agree to a set of rules, and play on any open field. The first five official teams did not even have a coach.
