Script Details

Sample provided for auditions:

Quaker male 1: "I would do for a fugitive slave whatever I should like to have done for me. If he asked my protection, I would extend it to him to the untmost of my power. If he was hungry, I would feed him. If he was naked I would clothe him. If he needed advice, I would give him such as I thought beneficial to him."

Quaker male 2: "I felt my penalty was a licence to help laves for the rest of my life. If any of you know of a slave who needs assistance, send him to me. Now that you have relieved me, I will go home and add a story to my house so that I can accommodate more of God's poor."

Educated white male, southern accent: "My father addressed the slaves pleasantly, and then asked, 'Well boys, why do they chain you?' The answer, 'they have teken us away from our wives and children , and they chain us lest we should make our escape and go back to them.' Later, as my father explained to me the meaning of slavery, the thought arose in my mind, 'How terribel we should feel if father were taken from us.'"

Southern Male 2: "Our aim was safety not speed, for it make little difference to the fugitive whether he was a week or a month getting to Canada, so that he got there safely and was fed on the way."

African American Male 1: "I threw myself on the ground, rolled in the sand, seized handfuls of it and kissed them, and danced round till, in the eyes of several who were present, I passed for a madman. Don't you know? I'm free!"

African American Male 2: "I don't respect this law. I don't fear it. I won't obey it! It outlaws me, and I outlaw it!"

African American Male 3 (Frederick Douglas): Let us render the tyrant no aid; let us not hold the light by which he can trace the footprints of our fleeing brother."

African American Female (Harriet Tubman): I was free, but there was no one to welcome me to this land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land. I was free, and they should be free."
