1. The spectacle of a review of the Naval Fleet before the reigning monarch is a great British tradition which is supposed to date back to the early years of the fifteenth century and the reign of Henry V, who is thought to have reviewed his ships before sailing to France and winning the Battle of Agincourt.
2. Fleet Reviews were originally intended as demonstrations of naval strength during times of war but in later years most became purely ceremonial affairs, organised to celebrate the coronation of a king or queen or a royal occasion such as a jubilee.
