Project Main Details

Narrator for Children's Educational App
Overview of the Project – the App seeks to teach young children (ages 3 – 6) how to behave appropriately when with their peers. The App is based on an existing video title that uses video modeling, a proven therapeutic methodology, to help teach young children how to behave appropriately, solve problems, make good decisions and properly communicate with their friends and other peers in common social scenarios and settings. In the existing video, there are 16 scenarios in which child actors are first shown making an incorrect choice and exhibiting negative behaviors, which results in appropriate consequences. The video then helps teach how to make a good choice in that scenario by modeling appropriate, positive behaviors. Lessons focus on common behavior problems for children, such as strategies to resolve conflicts with peers without resorting to tantrums, name calling or physical violence; self-management and dealing with anger and frustration in a positive fashion; sharing and taking turns with friends; being a good sport; telling the truth; bullying; not interrupting; and being nice to friends and not taunting, and encouraging friends who are less competent instead of teasing. The App turns the existing video into an interactive experience by requiring the user to make good choices when presented by common issues, by rewarding the user if they choose correctly, and if the user chooses the wrong answer, explaining why it is the wrong answer and offering guidance. The “heavy lifting” of moving the user through each story (scene) is done through the Narrator.

“Narrator” Character – the Narrator is a comforting adult presence that helps guide the young user through each learning scenario presented in the App. The Narrator remains off screen at all items, and is only manifested through his voice. The Narrator sets up each learning scenario by explaining what the main focus of the scenario is, and then walks the user through the scenario by playing videos segments and then pausing to ask the user questions. The Narrator then congratulates and reinforces correct answers, and explains why wrong answers are wrong, offering second chances to keep the user moving through the scenario. The Narrator from time to time interacts with one of four insect characters (who are featured throughout the video), and the insects also help advance the scenario and provide guidance to the user. The Narrator is warm, patient, and helpful, without being patronizing. The Narrator enunciates clearly and speaks at a slightly lower than normal rate, to make sure the young user can follow along. The Narrator is genuinely enthusiastic when the user answers correctly, but doesn’t make a big deal out of a wrong answer, just matter-of-factly points out why it’s not the best answer. The Narrator speaks standard American English without a regional accent. The Narrator most likely uses a lower register, and presents as middle-aged or older.

Technical – please deliver finished, edited files, recorded @ 16 bit mono, encoded as LEI16 (little-endian integer 16-bit linear PCM), using a 48 kHz (not 44.1 kHz) sample rate, packaged in a Core Audio File Format (.caf) container. Files to be uploaded via Dropbox, using a common file naming convention that ties to the script which is presented in “nodes” which roughly equate to one line of dialog (which unfortunately has to be in Word, not Final Draft or equivalent, for issues relating to programming). For example, the file for the line of dialog contained in Node 187 of the regular difficulty level (B) of Story 12 would be “story12_b187.caf”). In some cases, to save space and reduce the overall size of the App, the same lines will be reused within the same Story or even across multiple Stories; those lines are marked with an “*” in the script and are not highlighted.

Availability for Pickups – talent should be available for pickups from April 8 – 19.

NARRATOR VO: “This Scene is about taking turns picking which game to play when we play with friends. Taking turns picking is fair to everyone. And when we take turns, everyone gets a chance to play their own favorite game. First let’s see what happens when one of our insect friends, Spider, doesn’t want to let his friends choose what to play – he only wants to do his own activity.”

NARRATOR VO: “See, look how much fun Butterfly had when she played with her friends, even though she didn’t choose the game. Spider only wanted to do his thing, so he ended up all alone.”

NARRATOR VO: “You can choose either … it’s more fun to play alone … or … it’s more fun to play with friends”

NARRATOR VO: “That’s right! It’s almost always more fun to play with your friends than to play all by yourself.”

NARRATOR VO: “Hmmm. That doesn’t seem right. Did you notice how much fun the friends had playing together? Poor old Spider was all by himself. Let’s watch again and see.”
