In 1912, the National Shoe Retailer’s Association was founded by retailers with a common goal: “the encouragement of trade and commerce, fostering and protecting the welfare and interest of persons engaged in the sale of shoes at retail, by promoting fellowship among such persons.”
Over the years, the Association has seen many changes, but one thing has remained constant, NSRA’s commitment to be the independent footwear retailer’s primary resource and advocate.
You are NSRA. From the single-store owners with half a dozen employees to multiple-store owners with scores of employees. You provide shoes and related goods to men, women and children all over the country. Your businesses transact 20% of retail footwear sales in the U.S. annually, generating more than $9 billion of commerce in a $50-plus-billion-dollars-per-year industry.

NSRA helps our members in many ways. The Association represents members among manufacturers and suppliers. We use our collective retail power to help drive business costs down and increase profitability. This leverage also allows NSRA negotiate for shipping and transaction processing at rates lower than businesses could negotiate individually.

Saving money is just one-way NSRA helps members prosper. We also offer information resources that are among the best in the industry, including employee training, publications, and educational events designed to keep retailers on the cutting edge.
Shoe Retailing Today
NSRA also offers research and other tools to help retailers build on the foundation of their own investments and entrepreneurial skills. With help from the Harvard University School of Business, The Business Performance Report started publishing in 1923. The NSRA also produces the Leisure Trends Sales Reports with information that will be a game changer for the independent sector.

The future of independent shoe retailing is bright, because the NSRA never stops thinking ahead. Three years ago, the NSRA created NextGen a program for the Next Generation of Independent Retailers. This initiative promises to keep the independent footwear community strong for the next 100 years; by helping new generations see the benefits and rewards of joining the family's business

100 years ago, long before Facebook was created, the original NSRA social network was born to bring retailers together. The founders believed that, as a group, they could generate ideas, help each other solve problems, create friendships, and learn how to be the very best. The fellowship they created has given shoe retailers a framework for creating life-lasting friendships.
