SCENE - VIDEO AUDIO
1
We open on a stately looking Victorian home at twilight. It’s the home of Congressman Davis on South Queen St. in Lancaster, PA. It’s Spring– 1903. We see a bright light shining in a darkened study on the first floor of the home. The light is that of an old “Magic Lantern” projector. We hear the voices of four men- Howard BOMBURGER , Mr. Harris, Mr. Cole –local businessman in Lancaster- and Congressman Davis. SFX: Sound of crickets chirping and night birds singing.
VOICES:
CONGRESSMAN DAVIS: Good evening my friends. So glad you could be here tonight.
MR. COLE: Our pleasure, Congressman.
MR. HARRIS: Ahh, we having a “Magic Lantern Show” ?
MR. HARRIS: Good to see you, Howard.
2
We creatively represent three men shaking hands, greeting each other, taking their seats for the Congressman’s “Magic Lantern Show.”
MR. HARRIS: “A new town?” Why that sounds a a bit farfetched, don’t you think?
4
(NOTE: At this point , the Congressman’s “Magic Lantern Show” begins. Each of the slides we see on the screen will be stylized to appear as if done about “1900”. From time to time, we will also see the shadows of our audience of three men pointing to slides on the theater screen and commenting.
HARRIS: I’m for that!
9
Same as above, but with the shadow of H. BOMBURGER this time pointing to the screen BOMBURGER: And, he’s turning a healthy profit, too.
HARRIS : Which means?
13
Slum photos. We also see shadow of HARRIS in the foreground pointing to the screen
HARRIS: Say, that’s the Bowery of New York City!
36
We see a photo of Pullman City – Source: Pullman Museum HARRIS : “PULLMAN, Illinois”
38
We see a photo of George Pullman. We also HARRIS in the foreground, pointing to the screen.
HARRIS: Yes, but “Pullman” had serious problems…
42
We see dramatic sketch of Pullman Riot
HARRIS: And, the Pullman Riot!!
45
We see a photo of a prosperous Milton Hershey – Source: HCA
We see HARRIS’s shadow pointing to screen
HARRIS: Well, Let’s say Milton DOES build this new chocolate factory, AND a new town. How’s his town going to be different from any of these others you’ve shown us?
51
HARRIS: “Rail lines?”
53 HARRIS: All right, but what about the town?
55 HARRIS: … you think that might lead Milton Hershey to build a “model industrial town” the likes of which the world has never seen.
58
We see the shadows of COLE and HARRIS and BOMBURGER in the foreground of the screen shaking hands
COLE: Fascinating!
HARRIS: Who would have thought it?
