Project Main Details
Slowly, these indigenous people of Mesopotamia are disappearing. War and repression have decimated this once large community and led many to seek refuge abroad. Today, only three-thousand Syriac Orthodox Christians are left in Turkey. They are a minority in their homeland, living amongst the Kurds, the Arabs, and the Turks.
My film, Mountain of Servants, is a short documentary (12 minutes) that profiles five members from this dwindling ancient minority. I shot the film in the summer of 2014 together with my crew, and am currently in post-production.
The budget of the film is medium-low, but the production value is extremely high and we have connections at several prominent film festivals. We aim to screen the film at the Istanbul Film Festival, South By Southwest, and many other festivals in Europe and the United States. The film is primarily aimed toward a western audience who have no prior knowledge of the Syriacs.
I have poured my heart and soul into the project for over six months now. I would be thrilled to collaborate with any narrator who is taken by the story and is interesting in lending his talents. Unfortunately, I cannot pay a very high fee, but I promise that you will be helping to tell an important and compelling story. I will do my best to help ensure that you are respected and credited for your work.
The main ideas explored in the film are: tradition, nationalism, secrecy, and myth.
The mood is: ominous, foreboding, and mystical.

2. Suphi Hindiyerli (pronounced Sufi Hindi-yer-li) is the last living master of Telkari, an art native to Mesopotamia that uses gold and silver wires as thin as a piece of hair to craft fine ornaments. It requires the precision of an engineer, and the creative vision of a painter. The pursuit of perfection keeps him young.
