He was born in eighteen eighty seven with the proverbial “silver spoon” in his mouth. William was heir to the Borden family’s vast manufacturing empire that produced everything from ice cream to Elmer’s Glue.
Everyone just expected William to learn the family business and take over the Borden operations someday, but he had other plans. William just wasn’t interested in wealth. He felt God was sending him in another direction. So instead of becoming a captain of industry and against the wishes of his family, he enrolled in seminary.
The Borden family indulged him but thought he’d eventually come to his senses. They expected him to return to the business, but after graduation he still hadn’t given up. William said God was calling him to share the Gospel with a community of Muslims living in China.
Soon after graduation, he began making plans for his trip to China but tragically, William died at the age of 25 after contracting Spinal meningitis.
Even though William never actually made it to the mission field, it was discovered after his death that he had willed all of his wealth to spreading God’s word in China. His family finally got a glimpse of how compelled William was to serve the Kingdom. For William, it was never about the money.
Later, friends found his Bible and sent it to his parents. What they discovered inside has had a huge impact on the lives of countless believers - especially those in the mission field. Shortly after preparing the will that gave his fortune to God’s Kingdom, William wrote in the margin of his Bible, “No Reserve” Later, after his father wrote him that he’d no longer be welcome in the family business, William wrote, “No Retreat”. Then, just before he drew his last breath, dying of spinal meningitis, he wrote, “No Regrets”.
William Borden turned his back on a life of luxury and never became a missionary in China, but he was no failure. Still today, his life story inspires believers to resist the snares and trappings of earthly treasures for a higher purpose—serving God’s Kingdom.
