MoneyLife Joan Christilaw
This script will be used to tell a cinematic story. Each story will feature "ken burns" style photos and videos representing the script. The voice should be a great storyteller. Story should be told very dramatically emphasizing all the action unfolding within. I want to feel how engaged you are as the storyteller. The victories should feel triumphant and the tragedies should be disastrous. The soundtrack will be film score that directly matches the tone and feel of the script and voice. It will also feature subtle sound effects supporting the story.

Joan Christilaw lost her husband Allen to cancer in nineteen ninety. At the time, Joan was actually on fairly solid ground financially. Her house was paid for and she had some life insurance money, but it just didn’t last very long. You see, Joan’s business, her primary source of income, was losing money... and losing it fast.

So Joan did what she felt like she had to do to keep her business going. She took out a new mortgage on the house, but unfortunately things never turned around. When she finally closed the doors to her business, Joan found herself with no job, little income, and fifty thousand dollars of debt.

Joan wanted to pay off that debt but could only get temporary, part-time work and for years, she failed to make any progress on it. She had nothing in savings and every dollar that came in went out just as quickly.

Then one day, everything changed. After years of struggling to make ends meet, Joan heard a Crown radio program on the topic of saving. She learned that the Bible actually says we should save — even if we’re in debt.

So she set a personal goal to save a thousand dollars, even though it was a struggle just to pay her bills each month. Joan remembers praying, “We’re going to try this, Lord, but You’re going to have to show me the path.”

And God did just that! Joan found a bank that allowed her to open certificates of deposit for only a hundred dollars and she somehow managed to set aside enough money to purchase her first CD.

Joan began watching every penny, limiting her spending to the absolute minimum. Two months later, she had scraped together another hundred to buy another CD. And then a few months later, she did it again! Finally after an entire year, Joan reached her goal. One thousand dollars!

Looking back, Joan says the hardest part about learning to save was just getting started. Instead of spending money on things that give only short-term pleasure, she consistently made the choice to buy one more CD. When emergencies came up, she had money to meet them, and didn’t have to use her credit cards.

Through it all, Joan continued to trust God. She saved regularly, and began to make serious progress paying off her mountain of debt.

Early in the process, Joan wrote herself a note and set it aside until the day she made her last mortgage payment. After dropping the final payment in the mail, Joan took a moment to savor the note. It simply said:

“By the time you read this, you will be debt free.”
