Namaste. I’m Sanjit, from Mumbai, India.
Let me tell you a little bit about our culture. Religion plays a major role in the daily lives of most Indians. The majority of Indians are Hindu, and others are Muslim or Sikh.
If you have an Indian colleague on your virtual team, these tips might help to get the best out of that relationship.
•We appreciate punctuality but are relaxed about it ourselves. We have a less hurried attitude about time than most westerners.
•As well, we have a strong sense of what westerners call ‘fatalism’ so time is not a major source of anxiety for Indians.
•Business is not conducted during religious holidays, and these are numerous.
•Our personal feelings form the basis for the truth for Indians, but a strong faith in religious ideologies is always present. The use of objective facts is less persuasive than a combination of feelings and faith.
•India is a moderately collectivist culture, so the decisions of the individual must be in harmony with the family group and social structure.
•The word ‘no’ has harsh implications in India. We are more likely to use an evasive refusal, because it’s considered more polite.
•We have a communication style that is quite loquacious and talkative compared to other Asian cultures.
•We like to show and share our emotions – joy, disappointment and grief are expressed without inhibition.
