Let me tell you a little bit about our culture. When we’re not working, many Germans enjoy outdoor activities, like hiking, camping and skiing. We take advantage of our 6 weeks’ vacation time each year.
If you have a German person on your virtual team, congratulations, you are very lucky. These tips might help to work with your German colleague.
•Punctuality is very important. We’re second only to the Swiss in our desire for timeliness.
•We like to deal in facts. We’re quite analytic and conceptual in our processing of information.
•Our reputation for quality is based on slow, methodical planning. We believe it takes time to do a job properly.
•For this reason our pace of decision making is much slower than that of the US or Great Britain.
•Once we decide on a position, Germans will rarely budge from that position.
•Germans like directness, and we dislike hype and exaggeration. Case studies and examples are very helpful for Germans.
•We expect a job to be well done, so we don’t expect, or give compliments. Why compliment people who are simply doing their duty?
•We like to work through tasks one at a time, rather than doing many at once. We wish to be thorough rather than speedy.
•You’ll find our communication style is frank, open, direct and often loud. For Germans, truth comes before diplomacy. If we disagree, we will say so. And our arguments are logical, weighty and well thought out.
•You’ll find we don’t like changes. Sudden changes – even if they may improve the outcome – are not welcomed.
•We don’t like to discuss personal matters during business meetings, and we don’t appreciate humor in a business context.
