Our culture is shaped very much by our history. China sees herself as the Chung-Kuo – the middle kingdom, center of the universe and the world’s oldest culture and society. So, it’s hardly surprising that we have a sense of cultural superiority, which does affect our view of foreigners.
We are also influenced by the teaching of Confucius who taught us:
•We should observe and respect unequal relationships. Parents, teachers and bosses must all be obeyed.
•We must behave in a virtuous way towards others. Everybody’s ‘face’ must be maintained.
•Education and hard work must be prized.
•We should be moderate in all things. Save, stay calm, avoid extremes and shun indulgence.
Collectivism is very strong in China. A Chinese person belongs to four basic groups; the work unit, family, school and community. Obligations to each group mean that Chinese people have limited social or geographic mobility. For this reason, the issue of ‘face’ is very important.
If you have a Chinese colleague on your virtual team, it is important for you to understand these things about Chinese people and culture.
•Chinese people are extremely punctual; we abhor wasting anyone’s time.
•We are courteous and considerate communicators, and regarded as more direct than our Japanese neighbors.
•Politeness is observed at all times. Confrontation and loss of face (for all parties) must be avoided.
•When dealing with Chinese colleagues you are advised not to reject a Chinese proposal out of hand. When you negate the idea, you negate the person.
•Chinese people rarely say no directly. We prefer to hint at difficulties and obstacles rather than confront them directly.
•Power distance is large, so inequalities are expected and desired.
•We believe that age brings seniority.
•We also believe that the ideal boss is a benevolent autocrat, that subordinates expect to be told what to do and Individualism is taboo.
•Relationships are more important than tasks.
•Confrontation is to be avoided – harmony and consensus are the ultimate goals.
