People describe Brazilians as typically loquacious, exuberant, compassionate, imaginative and patriotic. We’re very proud of our beautiful country!
Concepts of class and status are strong, and will often determine what job a person has in Brazil.
Let me give you a few tips about working with Brazilians, which might be useful if you have one of us in your virtual team.
•You’ll find we’re very relaxed about punctuality. 15 to 30 minutes late is not considered late in Brazil.
•Brazilian conversations are highly animated, with lots of interruptions, to the agenda and to each other. We use gestures and facial expressions to emphasize our point of view. Understand that what we are saying comes ‘from the heart’.
•In a face to face meeting, we use a lot of eye contact, and physical contact by touching arms, hands or shoulders.
•The sign for ‘ok’ (a circle of first finger and thumb) is considered vulgar in Brazil, so we never use this.
•We’re very open to discussion on most subjects, but home and family are private topics that we don’t tend to talk about, until we know you better.
•We tend to approach problems indirectly, and we allow our feelings to dictate the solution, as well as facts.
•The individual is responsible for decisions (as opposed to collective decision making).
•We conduct business through personal connections and expect long-term relationships.
•Like Americans, we tend to be very futuristic in our outlook, dispensing with the old and constantly building the new.
