FILE NUMBER 1
Valmay: My greatest disappointment was that I didn’t reach my goal that I set for lowing the company’s expenses for my department by 15%. I began an internal program which relied heavily on staff being engaged to self-manage their costs in five workplaces, UK, Sweden, South Africa, Australia and the US. Because of market conditions and a less-than-ideal communication plan to coworkers, the program never really took off.
FILE NUMBER 2
Valmay: I still believe that the program could have been successful. When I first proposed my plan, I was told that it had been done before and failed miserably. I wanted to prove them wrong because it had worked well so well at my previous company. My boss, who was located on the other side of the world, had predicted failure from the outset.
After authorizing the project he didn’t actively participate in it, or assist me when I hit barriers. My marketing colleagues, who were located in a different country, never seemed to get my story into the monthly newsletter and I consequently let the program drift. Still, I can’t blame anyone else, it was my responsibility.
If I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t have given credence to all of the naysayers. I would have found ways to publicize the program myself via email, the lunchroom bulletin boards, our department web pages and global training seminars.
I would have ensured that this project was listed on my weekly meetings with my boss – as a separate agenda item. That way we would have talked about it regularly and potentially not let the project derail so much.
Most importantly, I learned that I shouldn’t sit back and wait for others to abide by their commitments, especially when initially they aren’t enthusiastic about the project. I got the authorization to go ahead with the project, and I accept responsibility for not having reached the programs goals.”
