Project Main Details

Missing Persons
If you are familiar with A&E's show The First 48, or if the actors are, it would be helpful. Our project, The First 48: Missing Persons is a pilot for a spin-off. The biggest difference between The First 48, which is about catching murderers and bringing them to justice, is that our show is about police saving lives. Therefore the tension in the shows is very different. Our narrator has to help convey that difference in emotion. We don't want to get melodramatic but we have to keep the suspense going. Our narrator has to be a storyteller who can allow the audience to identify with him while he still retains a strong degree of authority and an insider's point of view. Not too narrator-like but not character-y or too chummy either. It's a delicate balance.

Script Details

Script below provided by the seeker, please read a portion for auditions.
Narrator: Chicago, Illinois. It’s just after 12, on a bitterly cold, windy night. At the Illinois Institute of Technology, two miles south of the Loop, 19-year old freshman Benjamin Collen has disappeared.

Narrator: Det. Laura Skrip is the lead detective on the Collen case. 15 years on the force, she’s been with the Special Victims Unit for 5 years.

Narrator: Credit card records obtained from Collen’s mother, indicate that he purchased a large amount of nitrous oxide—an aerosol propellant that can be used as a hallucinogen.

Narrator: Detectives hear from a fellow student who reports seeing Collen walking toward Lake Michigan about 12:30am.

Narrator: Skrip and Corcoran must determine whether Collen continued east toward Lake Michigan, or turned south, back towards the campus.

Narrator: This may be the break Skrip and Corcoran need. Footage from the surveillance camera should show Collen’s route after he left the lakefront. Skrip alerts the Crime Prevention Information Center, which maintains digital records of the more that 700 crimewatch cameras the police operate.

Narrator: On their way to headquarters to view the footage, they take 31st St, exactly where Collen was last seen.

Narrator: After scanning hours of grainy images, they think they might have something.

Narrator: This view, recorded at 12:24am, appears to match witness descriptions of what Collen was wearing.

Narrator: The footage from the robotic camera doesn't show where Collen might have gone coming back from the lake… or whether he came back at all.

Narrator: Just before midnight, detectives arrive at Collen’s dormitory.

Narrator: Corcoran hopes the roommate might shed some light on Collen’s state of mind before he disappeared?

Narrator: Detective Skrip’s search has uncovered several cartridges of nitrous oxide.

Narrator: The gas is inhaled, sometimes using a plastic bag. It’s a potentially lethal drug, which depletes the oxygen supply in the body. Their search has turned up no new evidence of where Benjamin Collen might be.

Narrator: The detectives confront a darker possibility.

Narrator: If Collen fell or jumped in this frigid water, it’s unlikely he survived.
