Prepare to Breathe. Listen closely and relax. Sit in a comfortable chair with armrests and let the weight of your body sink right in. Feel your arms and legs supported by the chair and be aware of your feet comfortably in contact with the ground. To help focus on your breathing, place one hand on your chest or abdomen and watch your hand rise and fall with each breath. Pay attention. Breathe in – breathe out (sound). Breathe through your nose if possible. If unable, breathing in through your mouth will suffice. Relax as you focus on the sound and feeling of each long and slow deep breath. Inhale deeply and slowly through your nose and feel it down into your abdomen. You’ll see and feel your abdomen rise with each inhalation and your chest should move only slightly. Take a deep breath, in through your nose and out through your mouth. Slowly to a count of 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 … As you begin, focus on your heart. Clear your mind of any other thoughts. Liken this exercise to working out different muscles in the gym. Instead of working your back, shoulders or biceps, think of this as exercising and developing your heart brain connection. Notice that when you take in a deep breath your heart rate slightly increases and as you exhale your heart rate decreases. The more your practice, the better you will get at hearing your heartbeat.
