There is a sequence of events that causes synaptic vesicles to open and release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to receptors present on the plasma membrane of a postsynaptic neuron, causing ligand-gated channels to open. This generates a postsynaptic potential.
A depolarizing postsynaptic potential can trigger an action potential, allowing the process to continue.
