Project Main Details

Medical College Retirement
We need a completed VO by 10AM Friday so we'll listen to auditions tonight. Sorry it's such a rush.

A rough cut of the piece is available at the link below. It's a retirement presentation for a dinner. The pronunciations in the rough cut are correct. Even though he's retiring, we're not looking for somber. The middle section that starts with the reference to his early days with the ski show should obviously be read with a smile in the voice. The end needs to be strong because our honoree will walk to the stage after the last sentence of narration as the music swells and the crowd begins to applaud.

NARRATOR: That’s a pretty good question don’t you think?
What is it that separates good medical schools from great medical schools?
People familiar with the *****************************have their opinions on this.
And among the things they name is retiring president ******************

NARRATOR: A lasting legacy.
When people talk about************, they often say that that legacy is due to his “vision.”
We’re here to celebrate his vision for the **************************** and his leadership there…
…but without vision his career could have turned out a little differently.
Without vision, he could have pursued a career in entertainment like when he performed with the Min-Aqua Bats Water-ski Club during his college summers at home.
He might have accepted his admission offer from the Marquette University School of Medicine.
Or he could have stayed in the seminary and continued studying for the priesthood.
Or after distinguishing himself as an attorney at Quarles and Brady, where he had the largest health care law practice in the state, he might have remained a prominent Milwaukee lawyer.
But the *****************************came calling hoping he would share his vision.

NARRATOR: But they did select him in May of 1990.
And during his 20-year tenure as president and CEO the **************************** has:
constructed $200 million in new facilities,
received more than $240 million in philanthropic gifts,
expanded community engagement,
created the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences,
There has been a 594% increase in the operating budget.
A 433% increase in endowed professorships.
A 275% increase in faculty physicians.
And a 1,482% increase in the endowment.
The Medical College has become a national research center with new initiatives in genetics, imaging and biotechnology.
Bolger guided the receipt of more than $300 million from the 1999 conversion of Blue Cross and Blue Shield United of Wisconsin from a non-profit to a for-profit corporation.

NARRATOR: Bolger had built community trust while serving on more than 20 civic boards including the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Milwaukee Ballet.

NARRATOR: Growing the college has meant raising its visibility on the national scene by serving as chairman of the Association of Academic Health Centers.
And by focusing on research.

NARRATOR: But while******* is proud of the growth of the Medical College…

NARRATOR: …And while he’s excited about the opportunities the BlueCross BlueShield endowment provides…

NARRATOR: …It’s his connection with the faculty and students that he has always treasured.

NARRATOR: From his days as a Minoqua-bat through the seminary, a law career and his leadership of the College, *********** has served with distinction.
Tonight it is our turn to honor this service.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the*************************************************
