The Massachusetts cranberry industry is a story older than the United States. With roots in the distant past before the arrival of colonists and with a future encompassing the entire globe, it is a story of perseverance, ingenuity, and innovation which has weaved a rich cultural heritage in the cranberry growing areas of Massachusetts.
Today, Massachusetts cranberry growers are leaders in developing innovative ways to harvest and grow cranberries, improving on an industry that has lasted for generations...
Water – a necessity for any type of agriculture – has an especially important role in the production of cranberries. One visit to a cranberry bog and the central role of water is immediately evident. From the water in the surrounding wetlands to the ditches dividing the bogs for drainage; from the icy winter floods used for horticultural practices and neighborhood skating to the crimson harvest each autumn, water is everywhere...
Each year, just as spring turns to summer, the cranberry bogs of Massachusetts turn into fields of whitish pink blossoms, thousands upon thousands of tiny white flowers dot the bogs. It is often said that the shape of the blossom gave the European colonists the inspiration for the name cranberry, a derivation of crane berry for the similarity between the flower and the cranes that lived nearby. And with the arrival of these blossoms come armies of honey bees, bumble bees, and other insects, searching for the pollen and nectar within the flowers.
