Voice must sound like the Mark Twain documentary by Ken Burns
This is Sam Clemens some still call me Mark, others Mr. Twain. I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little history with you. This building you are standing in is the Angels Hotel, now home to the fine business of Calaveras Coin & Pawn. My how this little town has changed. See when I was last here Angels Camp was a true mining camp full of those seeking to find their fortune in gold, myself included although my mine didnt produce any color until after I sold it.
When I made my various visit to the Angels Hotel, no one thought that it would end up making Calaveras County or myself famous. Never the less it did... see back in 1865 I was still a young man full of dreams and folly. I was staying at a friends’ cabin on Jackass Hill, and would often frequent this very spot you are standing. One night, bartender and owner Ross Coon, told me about a certain man and his frog. "Coon" as everyone called him approached me at the bar one night and tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Mr Twain use being a newspaper man, you might get some use out this honest to goodness story I got." He proceeded to tell about the magnificent con job that resulted in a frog jump that took place on Main Street in front of this building, I thought it was hilarious, went back to the cabin and wrote about it. I of course made a few slight... well we will call them "additions "in my usual nature to liven up the tale, creative license is what I like to call it. Soon “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog” was published in the Saturday Press on November 1865. The story was later published in The Californian with the new and current title “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, and the rest my friends is history.
It certainly had a wide celebrity...but I was aware that it was only the frog that was celebrated. It wasn't I.
