Photos and music drive the story, but the narrator is essential in laying out all of the hard work that has been done to maintain and restore America's greatest landmarks.The tone is serious, uplifting, and hopeful.
The piece is narration heavy, and the recording session will take about 160 minutes; however, it is for a non-profit, not for broadcast, and will only be seen by a small group of attendees at the conference in Indianapolis at the end of October.
Chosen candidate must be able to do this recording in a professional home studio, as a 48K 16bit WAV or AIFF file. The candidate must be able to do the recording while on a phone patch with the client, so that they can direct the sessions. The 1889 Boyle Hotel was known as the ‘Gateway of Boyle Heights’-- a rare example of Victorian-Italianate commercial architecture that showcased Los Angeles’ growth in the 19th century. Originally the tallest building in Boyle Heights, the hotel was converted to apartments and housed many musicians from nearby Mariachi Plaza.
Yet the iconic structure became plagued by maintenance issues, lawsuits, and vermin, and it was threatened by demolition in 2006. Then, the East LA Community Corporation purchased the building to create affordable housing for the surrounding low-income community. The group used local and state subsidies, tax credits, and private equity to preserve the exterior, modernize the interior, and restore the signature red brick and gold cupola.
Now, the Boyle Hotel has reopened with rehearsal space for local mariachis, a business center, a new Metro line across the street, and more Its restoration shows how community engagement and creative thinking can save a cultural treasure.
Built in 1929 as headquarters for Western Electric, the 12‐story warehouse was known as much for its Art Deco architecture as for its role in making and shipping telephone equipment. Yellow Pages moved in and installed its iconic Michigan Yellow Pages sign in 1958.
After its sale in 1995, the building sat vacant and dilapidated for 12 years – until Neighborhood Services Organization stepped in to convert it to 155 units of permanent supportive housing for previously homeless residents of Detroit. Turning a huge warehouse into modern apartments took $50 million and creative thinking.
The full-gut rehab relied heavily on environmentally friendly solutions. The restoration salvaged and restored many existing elements, including the famous Yellow Pages Sign. More importantly, the building now has the facilities needed to offer support services to improve resident’s skill levels to become self-sufficient. Now residents have a safe, healthy, and historic home – and like the NSO Bell Building they have an opportunity for a new beginning.
