********* may be the only word you struggle with in the script. It's pronounced ************ Pretty easy right? This is a chair. But it’s not just a chair, this represents a person. And more than that, it represents a story.
Some stories begin as fairy tales: she’s swept off her feet by the man of her dreams. He gets accepted to a great university. A young couple finds the perfect home in the suburbs and they start a family. The kids are smart and seem well-adjusted. The career is taking off. But somehow, in the midst of it all, there’s a deep sense that there’s something missing from the story. Somehow, the story seems incomplete.
Other stories read like nightmares. A devastating tragedy. An unwanted pregnancy. The loss of a job. The death of a loved one. A disabling illness. A series of poor judgments lead to brokenness. One mistake after another.
In fairy tales and nightmares, we all wrestle with the question: Is this all there is? Are we destined to live in a story of heartache and pain? Are we all just trying to keep up the fairytale facade? Or does the possibility of a better story exist?
We believe that deep down. Everyone wants to change their story. So we’re making room.
What if we all caught a vision for creating more space for stories? If a chair ultimately represents a story, what could happen if we worked together to find ways to make more room for more stories to find a seat—find a place to change?
We believe that God has called us to be a place where stories change—where lives get put back together— where marriages find hope—where families heal—where freedom is found—where people meet Christ—where the story we’re destined to live out can be discovered.
It’s not just a chair. It’s not just a body. It’s someone’s story. So we're making room for all the stories who aren't yet here. If our mission is to be a church thatʼs perfectly designed for the people who already attend, then we donʼt need more chairs. We don’t need to make more room. But if we want to continue to be a church that helps people change their stories, then have to—we are compelled to…make room.
So we ask the question: God, what would you have me do in order to accomplish your mission through ********** God, what would have me do to make more room for more stories to change?
Every story can change. Let’s make room.
