Player (Firewolf) (Northern Cheyenne, age 12+; and older version of him as prologue narrator): "More and more white people came into our land. They killed the buffalo and there were other troubles. White army officers asked the Cheyenne chiefs to sign a treaty to stop the fighting on the plains. After much discussion the chiefs did so and were given presents and food... But that did not end the problems."
Friend (Northern Cheyenne, age 13+): "Some horses are missing. We must find them quickly. If someone stole horses on our watch they will never take us on the next hunt."
Player’s Uncle (Northern Cheyenne, early-mid 30s): "You must choose your warrior society carefully. Your father was a member of the Fox Soldiers and would want you to follow his choice. The Dog Soldiers may have a reputation for bravery, but the Fox Soldiers will prove to be strong friends."
Mother (Northern Cheyenne, early mid 30s): "We need meat. Take the pack horse who is good in snow and look for any animal tracks. Hunt whatever you can. Your little brother is sick and needs strength."
Sister (Northern Cheyenne, age 16+): "Yes, mother, he would provide us with many blankets and kettles. But, I don’t know what will be expected of me in a Lakota band."
Suitor #1 (Southern Cheyenne, 18-20): "I do not understand why the white men attacked! Chief Black Kettle did not raid them. Chief Black Kettle wanted peace, that is why he flew the American flag
over his lodge!"
Suitor #2 (Lakota/Sioux, 18-20): "I have visited the whites at the trading post many times. We bring them buffalo robes and they give us bullets for our rifles. With the guns, we can kill many more buffalo.
Chief Little Wolf (Northern Cheyenne): "You and I have always been friends but today I cannot do for you what you ask. I do not want any trouble, nor do I wish to have blood shed at this agency, but I cannot do what you ask."
