Anita and Sue, two ********************* engage in casual workplace conversation. Anita notices a flyer Sue has created for her neighborhood that reads “Support Your Local Farmer’s Market.” **************logo is front and center on the flyer. A discussion ensues about Sue’s inappropriate use of the ********* emblem.

Anita: Hi Sue. Do you have a second to talk? I just noticed your flyer for the local farmer’s market event taking place this month….

Sue: Oh Anita, yes! Oh please say you’ll come out and support. You know, the Farmer’s Market is a personal favorite of mine, but general turnout has been just awful lately. I thought I’d create these nice flyers to help drum up some support here in the office and around my neighborhood. Don’t they look great!

Anita: Well that’s what I wanted to talk about Sue. I noticed that you’re using the ********* emblem here in connection with the event….

Sue: Yes, well, I thought it would be a nice touch, you know, since we do serve the community and all. Besides, who doesn’t love the************ (chuckle)

Anita: The Red Cross does indeed serve the community in many ways, but unfortunately Sue, using the********** emblem for personal projects like this is against company policy.

Sue: Oh… I…. wasn’t aware of that. Hmm… I guess I’ll need to remove the logo then. Thanks Anita. I really had no idea.

Anita: Of course, Sue. Oh, and yes… my family and I would be delighted to come support the Farmer’s Market this month.

Bill and Sarah, two ********************* assist at a local shelter after a natural disaster. Bill overhears Sarah talking to a publisher about the possibility of writing and selling a book about her experiences as a ********* volunteer assisting victims of this hurricane. Bill talks to Sarah.

Bill: Hi Sarah. Can I talk to you for minute?

Sarah: Sure Bill, what’s up?

Bill: I couldn’t help overhearing your conversation with Mr. Jones, the publisher from *******************************

Sarah: Wow, Bill – you really were listening. Yes, I did have a conversation with Mr. Jones, and he’s very interested in my story as a ******************* and my work during this devastating hurricane. I may have a book deal. I think I’ll call it … “the Red Crossroads”. No, wait... how about “A Damsel In the Storm.”

Bill: Um .. Sarah, you do realize that this …“book deal” is against company policy, don’t you?

Sarah: I think not, Bill. These stories are my stories. And I can share them with whomever I choose. If they happen to sell a few books, then so be it.

Bill: Come on Sarah, don’t you see? Any financial gain as a volunteer of the ****************** is strictly prohibited. It says so in the Code of Conduct, which also extends to volunteers. That includes me and you.

Sarah: OK seriously Bill? Don’t you think you might be overreacting a bit? Look, I appreciate your… “concern”, but don’t worry. I’ll discuss this with Human Resources this afternoon. And if all goes well, maybe I’ll mention you in my Acknowledgements. OK?

Bill: Good luck Sarah.

Sarah: Nope, from now on, call me by my pen name: Cadnice Pressmire.

A renovation is planned at a local Chapter. Frank, a Chapter board member, is a general contractor and wants to do the work. He is willing to give the Chapter a break on the cost. Frank approaches Marci, the Chapter CEO, about the opportunity.

Frank: …So Marci, with the anticipated renovations this fiscal year, I think the entire board should be mindful of our need to really watch our spending while increasing local contributions.

Marci: Oh I absolutely agree Frank. And I’ve got several topics already planned for discussion at the next board meeting on just that.

Frank: Excellent. But I’ve got another idea I’d like to discuss now if you have a moment….?

Marci: Of course, Frank - let’s hear it.

Frank: Well, as you know, I’ve been a self-employed General Contractor for 25 years now, and I’ve offered this Chapter countless advice on the upcoming renovations at no charge. But now that we’re about to start to renovation process, I just think it would make really good business sense if I officially took on the general contractor role for this entire project. Now of course I’d be willing to offer the Chapter a steep discount, you know, to reduce overall spending.

Marci: Oh I don’t know Frank. While I wish we could offer you the work, I just don’t think that would sit very well …from an ethical perspective.

Frank: What do you mean?

Marci: Well, surely your role as a member of our board conflicts with the possibility of you being hired on as the general contractor for the renovations. Ethically, it would not be wise for the board to even consider you for the opportunity, Frank. I’m sorry.

Frank: Hmm… I do see your point about the conflict. And I certainly wouldn’t want to jeopardize the integrity of the board. OK, in the best interest of the Chapter, I’ll just submit a list of qualified general contractors at the next meeting.

Marci: Thanks Frank. You always do come through for us.
