Project Main Details

Loco History Orchard
Voice Type for This Scene: Old-time farmer remembering his boyhood when he worked in an Orchard at Manzanar, California.

Project Background: This historical documentary DVD tells the story of the restoration of a 100-year-old steam-powered locomotive in Eastern California. Volunteers have a five-year plan to make the old train run again after 60 years in retirement.

Chapter: History of railroading in the California desert.

Scene: An old man remembers his youth as he would watch for a train from a distant apple orchard. In the far distance, the old steam locomotive (The “Slim Princess”) blows its whistle in a bygone era in 1914.

Emotion: The old pioneer reminisces, in youthful wonder, as he watches a far-off train heading to points unknown in 1914. A slight ironic twist occurs when the 25 mile per hour machine is called the “fast-express.”

Script Details

***custom demo required***

“Her top speed was only 25 to 30 miles an hour; yet we referred to the Slim Princess as the ‘Keeler-to-Mina-Fast-Express’.” “The orchard area at Manzanar was so quiet that one could watch for the train leaving Owenyo and note the plume of vapor when the whistle was sounded. It seemed a couple of minutes before the sound arrived at the orchard, but it was probably 40 seconds.“ “--Henry S. (Tom) Smith. 1914.”
