Project Main Details

Living Without Mental Illness
Sean Miller received 4 different mental illnesses diagnoses over a 10-year period. In 2005, during a 3 month long hospitalization, medical staff diagnosed him with schizophrenia, wrote off all hope of recovery and strongly encouraged his wife to leave him while making arrangements to place him into a chronic care facility. They stated that he would most likely be medicated and institutionalized for life due to his current symptoms and past medical history which involved hearing voices and self-harm. Undeterred, Sean and his wife Doris continued their search for help. In 2006, they made an appointment with a doctor in the United States by the name of Don Colbert that radically changed Sean's predicted outcome. Over the next 5 years, Dr. Colbert worked with Sean to identify and treat the underlying causes of his illness eventually enabling him to become completely medication and symptom free.

This documentary chronicles the Miller's journey from illness to wellness and serves to encourage those directly and indirectly affected by mental illness with a message of hope. It features interviews with various TV media personnel/medical professionals and scientists including:

• Dr. Colbert (MD and New York Times bestselling author);
• Michael Landsberg (host of TSN's Off the Record)
• Bryce Wylde (alternative healthcare expert, bestselling author and Dr. Oz Show medical advisory board member/regular guest); and,
• Dr. Gottfried Kellermann (chairman, CEO and founder of NeuroScience Inc.)

Our primary audience is those struggling with mental illness, adults ages 18-25 and their care providers (family members and medical professionals). As alluded to earlier, our message is one of encouragement and hope. It will appeal to those searching for answers and discontent with the status quo.
We look forward to hearing your submission.

VO: Traumatized and confused about what was happening to him Sean spent the next 14 days on the psychiatric ward. He was diagnosed with psychosis, given a prescription for antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-anxiety, a sleep aid and then was promptly discharged home with little follow up support.

VO: By 2004 Sean had been diagnosed with psychosis, depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder. As the diagnoses mounted so did the destructive and compulsive behaviour. He would buy furniture, clothes, and electronics and then destroy or give them away, wracked with guilt and buyer’s remorse.

VO: In early 2006 Doris began reading some books written New York Times bestselling author and physician, Dr Don Colbert ("Kole-bert"). While reading about some of the treatments and assessments he provided for his patients, it occurred to Doris that Sean might benefit from seeing a professional like Dr Colbert to help him with his health issues. She called the clinic in Florida and made an appointment for November 2006.
At first Sean refused to go fearing he would die. After much persuasion Doris won out and the moment the plane touched down, the wheels of change started to turn.

VO: Neurotransmitters are brain chemicals that communicate information through our brain and body. More than 100 of these chemical messengers have been identified, including serotonin, dopamine and adrenaline. They affect everything from sleep and weight to mood. They tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe and your brain that your toe hurts when you stub it. When they become imbalanced, the outward expression is one of mental imbalance, which is described as mental illness. The testing of neurotransmitter levels can be valuable in determining an appropriate course of treatment as Dr *********** describes.
