Spanish 101, Pronunciation

Today’s lesson is about pronunciation and the Spanish alphabet.

The Spanish alphabet is mostly the same as in English, with only a few differences.

Some letters are combined to form a different sound.

Che {che} is pretty straightforward. It sounds like C-H [see aitch] in English... Ch [chuh].

As in Chuy... Chile... China {China}... and Sancho.

Like che {che}, the double L [ell] is another combination letter, but the sound isn’t quite like English. It’s sort of an L-Y [ell why] sound. LL {elle}.

As in Guillermo... and lluvia.

The double R [are] normally comes between two vowels. It indicates a longer, rolling R [are] sound.

As in Arroz... and Carro.

Now, what about Ñ {eñe}?

It’s just an N-Y [en why] sound, and you already know at least one word with an Ñ {eñe}: Piñata.

Some others that you’ll learn are Año... Doña... and Cariño.

(Audition notes: for this part of the demo, we need Neutral Spanish. The part is for the main narrator who reads vocabulary words, listening prompts, etc. Imagine that you’re teaching a class of college Spanish students.)

buenos días

buenas tardes

buenas noches

¿Cómo está usted?

¿Cómo estás?

¿Qué tal?

¿Qué pasó?

más o menos

amigo, amiga

(Audition notes: for the final part of the demo, we need Neutral Spanish, but here’s where you get to do some voice acting. Please read the part of Rita or Rafael in the following exchange. Remember, this is for new Spanish students, so the lines need to be conversational and paced for a beginner.)

Rita: ¡Ay no! Mi cumpleaños este año es lunes. ¡Qué feo! Es imposible celebrar los lunes. ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?

Rafael: Es el primero de julio. Es un sábado.

Rita: ¡Ay, qué envidia! El día perfecto. Oye, cuando es el cumpleaños de Mario, tu mejor amigo?

Rafael: El cumpleaños de Mario es el 24 de diciembre.

Rita: ¡Ah, interesante!  Doble fiesta para él.

Rafael: Sí, ¿cómo no?
