With each tank of gas and every flick of the switch, we become more aware that our nonrenewable fossil fuel supply, things like petroleum and coal, won’t last forever. Especially since future energy demands will only increase across the planet. Renewable energy resources will help meet our nation’s and the world’s demands. For centuries, people have been harnessing renewable energy resources like wind and water. Anyone who lives in Wyoming is familiar with the wind. It’s a resource Wyomingites have used to their advantage for the past hundred years. However, the windmills of the Old West have given way to the wind farms of today. Arrays of turbines dwarfing their predecessors give Wyoming the capacity to produce 288 megawatts of electricity each year, enough for about 90,000 homes. The first installation was the Foote Creek Rim project, which came on line in the late 1990’s. Today, Foote Creek and its three subsequent phases produce almost half of Wyoming’s wind energy, about 135 megawatts. The area is one of the windiest places in the country, averaging wind speeds of 25mph.
