Script Details

Sample script below provided by the seeker, please read a portion for auditions.
Lake George is one of the most stunning bodies of water in North America. President Thomas Jefferson described it as ‘without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw’. His visit to the lake in 1791 came after thirty years of invasion and conflict between French, English and Colonial forces.

Over two hundred years later, Lake George is still in the midst of a serious invasion – not by colonial powers – but by dozens of invasive plants and animals.

Early European settlers introduced a host of species to the new American continent. Some arrived as stowaways, gaining passage in the ballast of ships and containers. Others traveled through the man made canal systems. Unchecked by natural predation, these organisms are fierce competitors to the native plants and animals, in some cases driving them to extinction and completely altering the landscape. This is the case across North America, and nowhere is it truer than the Lake George Basin.

Invasive species not only pose threats to the environment but also to the local economy. Lake George is dependent on the tourists who return here year after year to enjoy, as Thomas Jefferson did, the beauty and purity of the lake. If these environmental problems persist; if the quality of the water and native diversity is destroyed, the future for local residents could be in jeopardy.

Fortunately, Lake George has many stalwart defenders… men, women and children dedicated to managing, and some cases eradicating the invading species. Local programs to educate the public, manage the invasive species and create long term plans to preserve the area’s environment are models for how the rest of North America may chose to act in the future.

This documentary - and accompanying short outreach videos - will follow the scientists and citizens of the Lake George Basin who are dedicated to understanding and combating invasive species. We’ll uncover possible new threats and demonstrate solutions and preventative measures that may help avert similar problems in the future. Join us, above and below the surface of the water as we encounter - Lake Invaders.
