Before catching sight of the doors of the Roman city, the travellers that came from Seville travelled the last stretch of this road through cypresses. As they began to near Corduba, their path was surrounded by tombs of different shapes. A smell of incense, clouds of smoke and women’s cries honoured the burials of the deceased; a daily and natural image associated with the passage through the cemetery of whoever wanted to enter Cordoba.
A noble family who lived in the 1st Century A.D. wanted to honour the memory of their ancestors through these two cylindrical mausoleums imitating the big tombs of Rome. Both funerary monuments contained the urns with the remains of the deceased once they were incinerated with their most valuable objects.
Their memory lived on for a short time as in less than one century, the city expanded and occupied the tombs, over which houses of new Roman neighbourhoods were built.” " From the city of the dead to the city of the living.
