Script: WHEN I FIRST CAME TO THE PARENT CHILD CENTER I WAS SO BEATEN DOWN AND DEPRESSED. I WAS AFRAID TO WALK THROUGH THOSE DOORS. WHAT WOULD THEY THINK OF ME…WHAT WOULD THEY SAY…I COULDN’T THINK ABOUT THAT….I HAD TO FIND A BETTER WAY. I WANTED SO MUCH TO BE A BETTER PARENT TO MY KIDS THAN MY PARENTS WERE TO ME, BUT I WASN’T, I DIDN’T KNOW HOW…WAS THERE HOPE FOR ME? FOR MY KIDS? FROM THE MOMENT I WALKED INTO THE PARENT CHILD CENTER, I FELT ACCEPTANCE OF WHO I WAS. NO ONE JUDGED ME OR LOOKED DOWN ON ME, OR MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS A HORRIBLE PERSON. THEY UNDERSTOOD WHAT I HAD BEEN THROUGH, THEY ENCOURAGED ME, THEY TAUGHT ME BETTER WAYS TO DEAL WITH MY ANGER AND PAST HURTS. I KNEW I HAD A LONG WAY TO GO, BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME I FELT THERE WAS HOPE.
THE COUNSELING GROUP WAS INTENSE AND I HAD TO COME TO TERMS WITH SOME PRETTY UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES, I HAD TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT I’D DONE. I HAD TO COMMIT TO DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY. IT WAS SO HARD EMOTIONALLY, …I HAD TO SO MUCH TO LEARN AND SO MANY CHANGES TO MAKE TO BE THE KIND OF PARENT MY KIDS NEEDED AND DESERVED. I DID THE HOMEWORK AND BEGAN TO PUT INTO PRACTICE WHAT I WAS LEARNING FROM MY COUNSELOR AND FROM THE PARENTING EDUCATION CLASS. MY THERAPIST HELPED ME RELATE BETTER WITH MY KIDS…TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY WERE FEELING AND WHAT I COULD DO TO HELP THEM FEEL SECURE AND LOVED. SHE GAVE ME TIPS ON HOW TO USE PLAY TIME TO DEVELOP TRUST; AND TO RESOLVE CONFLICTS. THE SUPERVISED VISITATION PROGRAM ALSO MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE KID’S DAD TO START VISITING THEM AGAIN IN A PLACE THEY ALREADY FELT COMFORTABLE COMING TO, BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY, A PLACE WHERE THEY WOULD BE SAFE.
