A Success Dearly Bought

Narrator

The Revolutionary War begins with a crash of musket fire on April 19, 1775 as patriots fight for their rights and liberties in opposition to the King and British Parliament.

Following the fighting at Lexington and Concord, patriot forces from New England surround Boston and lay siege to the town.

To break the patriot’s hold, British forces formulate a plan to secure the higher ground of Charlestown and Dorchester Heights.

Patriot spies soon learn of the British strategy and in response, a force is ordered to fortify Bunker Hill, the highest point on the Charlestown peninsula.

On June 16, 1775, patriot leaders decide instead to fortify Breed’s Hill – the hill closest to Boston.

Under cover of darkness, Colonel William Prescott orders his Massachusetts militiamen to dig a redoubt with a breastwork to the rear.

Peter Brown

We worked there undiscovered till about 5 in the morn and then we saw our danger, being against 8 ships of the line and all Boston fortified against us. Peter Brown, Prescott’s Regiment, Patriot

Ann Hulton

Immediately a cannonading began on those works and on the enemy wherever they could be discovered within reach of their guns. Ann Hulton, British Loyalist.

Narrator

In the afternoon of June 17, British soldiers, under General William Howe’s command, land at Moulton’s Point.

Patriot leader, Colonel William Prescott, sends Connecticut troops under Captain Thomas Knowlton to oppose them.

New Hampshire regiments under Colonel John Stark join them and fortify a position near the Mystic River.

The patriot line is now complete.

General William Howe

...The troops were no sooner ashore than it was instantly perceived the enemy was very strongly posted. British General William Howe.

Narrator

British troops come under fire from patriot snipers hidden in Charlestown. At Howe’s request, warships set the town on fire. The wooden houses burn quickly, and smoke dims the sky. The destruction of Charlestown reinforces the patriot’s determination to defend their ground.

Ann Hulton

…we saw the fire and the sword, all the horrors of war raging. Ann Hulton, British Loyalist.

Narrator

Howe plans to outflank the Americans by sending a column along the Mystic River shore and a second column advancing on the rail fence through the adjacent riverside fields.

At approximately three in the afternoon they begin their march.

Narrator

As the British approach along the Mystic River beach, Stark holds his men steady at the stone wall.

The patriots hold their fire until the British soldiers are at close range. They then unleash volley after volley of musket fire.

The British are driven back in disarray, marking the end of the first assault.

Colonel John Stark

Where but the day before the mowers had swung the scythe in peace, lay the dead, as thick as sheep in a fold. Colonel John Stark, Patriot

Narrator

The British quickly regroup to attack again.

In the heat of the afternoon, Howe sends his forces up the thick grassy fields, marching in battle line formation over rough terrain.

Again, the patriots hold their fire until close range…

They let loose, creating confusion among the British infantry.

Their lines broken, the British flee once more to lower ground, marking the end of the second assault.

With renewed determination, Howe orders a third attack.

This time, he instructs his men to remove their heavy packs and make a bayonet charge against the redoubt and breastwork.

General William Howe

Fix Bayonnetts!

Narrator

The patriots pour fire into the attacking British, but their powder soon runs out.

Though the patriots fight back with rocks, musket butts, everything they have at hand, Howe’s men spill into the redoubt, their bayonets forcing out the last of the defenders.

Adjutant John Waller

Nothing could be more shocking than the carnage that followed the storming of this work.

We tumbled over the dead to get at the living…
British Adjutant John Waller.

Peter Brown

…I was in the fort till the Regulars came in and I jumped over the walls, and ran for about half a mile where balls flew like hailstones and cannons roared like thunder.
Peter Brown, Prescott’s Regiment, Patriot.

Narrator

The British win the day, but at great cost. Half of their forces have been killed or wounded.

General William Howe

I freely confess to you, when I look to the consequences of it, in the loss of so many brave officers, I do it with horror. The success is too dearly bought. British General William Howe.

Narrator

Stunned by the day’s events, the British camp on the battlefield, allowing the patriot militia to return safely to Cambridge.

Ann Hulton

We were exulting to see the flight of our enemies, but…in the evening the streets were filled with the wounded and the dying; the sight of which, with the lamentations of the women and children over their husbands and fathers, pierced one to the soul. Ann Hulton, British Loyalist.

Peter Brown

If we should be called into action again, I hope to have courage and strength to act my part valiantly in defense of our liberties and our country. Peter Brown, Prescott’s Regiment, Patriot.

Narrator

Though the British gain the hills, the war continues…

and the colonists have sent a clear message that they will stand up and fight for their beliefs.

Abigail Adams

The Day, perhaps the decisive Day is come on which the fate of America depends. Abigail Adams, Patriot.
