EVANS Both of us Coast Guard, both piloting landing craft here in the Pacific.
EVANS: Two days ago, we’re transportin’ Marines to Punta Cruz for an assault inland on Guadalcanal.
EVANS: We land ‘em okay. Doug and the others head back. My boat stays, just in case. Then, outta nowhere, enemy gunners jump us and damage our rudder. I jam the throttle forward and head back to base for help.
EVANS: Doug volunteers to lead more LCTs back to Punta Cruz. I pile-in with him.
EVANS: When we get there, our guys are back on the beach, and the enemy’s pourin’ it to ‘em.
EVANS: Somehow, we get all 500 Marines out safely. But, one of our boats hangs up on a sandbar. We pull it free.
EVANS: Doug covers our withdrawal, but we’re still in range. Then, I see a line of water-spouts!
EVANS: I shout for Doug to duck! He can’t hear me over the engines!
EVANS: When he opens his eyes, he says “Ray, did we get ‘em out okay?” I tell him, “yeah”. Then…he’s gone.
EVANS: They say Doug will be up for the Medal of Honor. The only Coast Guardsman ever to receive it.
EVANS: Went out again today. I felt like he was still there with me, still leadin’ us… my buddy, Doug Munro.
Budget: $150.00
