In the living room. Sandra walks in with glasses of water

SANDRA:
…Here you go. So. (sits down) Holly was telling me you scored the winning points at the football game on Saturday.

CHRIS:
Yeah, that was cool

SANDRA:
What was that like? What happened when you scored?

CHRIS:
Aw, you know. Like everyone went ballistic in the stands cause it was against Milford high and they were undefeated. They like put shaving cream all over my car.

SANDRA:
Holly said someone wrote “The Man” across the windows and everyone was honking when you drove downtown.

CHRIS:
Yeah, that was cool. Except I had to like scrub the car for an hour to get all the stuff off.

SANDRA:
Holly says your car is really special.

CHRIS:
Yeah, I worked all last summer at the paper mill to be able to buy it. Overtime and everything.

SANDRA:
I can see it from the window. Great looking car.

CHRIS:
It’s the deal, yeah.

SANDRA:
What if I asked you if I could borrow your car for tonight?

CHRIS:
Tonight? I mean. Well, I ....

SANDRA:
I mean what if. What would you want to know about me?

CHRIS:
Huh? I guess like if you’d treat it right. Cause there’s some stuff you need to know before you just drive it. Like the clutch has this way you need shift it and if you don’t do it right it-

SANDRA:
Damages the car?

CHRIS:
Well, yeah. I mean that car’s all I got right now.

SANDRA:
So I hear concern that you’d want to make sure I treated it right.

CHRIS:
Well, yeah.

SANDRA:
Relax, I’m not going to ask to borrow your car. But, you know I feel kind of the same way about Holly. I know you guys are just friends and you’re just going on a friendly date. But you know things have a way of getting out of hand sometimes. And I want you to promise me that you’re going to treat Holly the way you’d want someone treating your car if you loaned it to them. I know it’s hard to imagine, but she’s even more important to me than how you feel about your car. To put it another way, I want you to promise me that you will treat her the way you’d hope another man is treating your future wife tonight.

CHRIS:
Well, yeah. Sure. I’ll do that. I mean we’re just going to a movie.

SANDRA:
(Ironically) Exactly.
