"It’s just after dawn in the Plymouth Valley and already there is movement. Along the shores of Ninevah and in the highland meadows soft voices are heard as bodies rustle in their bunks. The pulse of bells and the call of the conch shell rouse the campers and counselors at the six Farm & Wilderness camps and as one they rise to meet a new day and the many adventures and opportunities that it will bring.
From the simple lodges built by many hands, the day begins with the chores that will help sustain this large community and will encourage each individual see beyond their own needs and work towards fulfilling the needs of the group. Children and adults move through the camps working together to stack firewood, tend to the animals on the farm, pump water for the morning meal, maintain the trails and set the tables for breakfast. This effort reflects the idea that “work is love made visible” and that each person has a responsibility to serve the larger good.
After dishes are cleared, voices are joined in song and the community sits together in the silence of Quaker Meeting, the day begins in earnest. Campers spread throughout the camps, immersed in a dynamic wilderness classroom. They are learning a diverse set of skills and are learning about themselves. They are forming relationships that will last a life time and are sharing experiences that will both challenge *o* and empower them as they grow into young adults. They will hike across a local ridge, scale the crags of a stone chimney, swing from a rope swing into the clear waters of the lake, gather eggs from the farm, harvest carrots for a dinner salad, carve a wooden spoon from the limbs of a fallen tree, play games like Stage Coach, Wild Women in the Woods, Sticks and Zairi. There will be laughter and passionate discussions in cabins and in the large forum of Town Meeting. Logs will be cut and hauled to the site of a fire to celebrate the summer and patient practice as a boy learns to start a small fire with a bow drill. Campers of every age will be called on for their contribution and leadership and through the work and play will find the self esteem and confidence needed for both.
There will be days when the camps will empty as campers and staff head off to hike the White Mountains of New Hampshire, paddle the lakes of New York or climb the local cliffs. They might spend two days traversing mountain ridges, six days helping on the farm of a local Vermont family, or even spend a month walking Vermont’s 270 mile Long Trail from end to end! Each trip is unique, but on all they will develop and use the outdoor skills that will continue to strengthen them as individuals while giving them the confidence and ability to help others.
Farm & Wilderness is an intentional community rich in adventure, history and spirit that is committed to creating a generation of leaders with the belief that people working together can bring about a more just and humane society. Through teaching the values of cooperation, simplicity, responsibility, leadership, empathy, spirituality and service and guided by the Quaker conviction that the Light of the Spirit is present in every person, we know that true change is possible."
