As a professional driver, you log more miles and more hours on the road than other drivers. There are more chances that you may be involved in an accident than the average driver. In addition, even if you are a very careful driver, there are factors such as bad weather, poor road conditions and the actions of other drivers that you cannot control.
So what should you do if you are involved in an accident? It is important to be prepared.
In the next few minutes we will discuss what you must know when involved in an accident – Who to call, what to do and just as importantly, what not to do. We will discuss how to protect yourself and your cargo, what is required of you after an accident, what information is needed and what photographs, if any, should be taken to help company investigators and accident reconstructionists.
The first thing to know is that all accidents should be reported. You may think a minor fender-bender is “nothing at all”. But, any accident, no matter how insignificant it may seem, can spell trouble. Many small and unreported accidents may become lawsuits and potential trouble for you and your company if not properly handled and documented. Trucks and truck drivers are big targets for lawsuits, whether they are at fault or not. Drivers can be held criminally and personally liable in lawsuits resulting from an accident. That may not be fair but it is a fact of life. Treat any accident as a reportable event and report it according to your company’s accident policy. If your company has standard accident forms, keep several blank copies handy in your truck.
