Atlas-Bid, is the bid entry system that lets you bid for next month's schedule from wherever you access the N-W-A Atlas Web Site whether it be at your base, at a down-line station, or from your personal computer at home.
There are two components of the Northwest Airlines preferential bidding system:
• Carmen is the software program that actually processes your bid and awards your schedule. As a side note, Carmen Systems of Gotenborg, Sweden is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jeppesen which, in turn, is a subsidiary of Boeing. Many other airlines including British Air, Delta, and Air-France/K-L-M use Carmen for their preferential bid system.
• Atlas-Bid is the program you use to enter a bid, view your bid results, and otherwise interact with Carmen.
Since Atlas-Bid is the primary interface that you will use to bid, I’ll typically refer to the preferential bidding program as Atlas-Bid.
Atlas-Bid consists of a series of screens and menus allowing you to select the desired function with the point and click of a mouse. The screens and menus guide you through the entire bidding process, and all bid selections are listed in plain English terms. This means you don't have to memorize the steps to bid and you don't have to learn complicated bid syntax. And since you select your preferences using a mouse, you don't have to worry about making input errors or typos - no typing is necessary! These and other features make it easy to get started and use Atlas-Bid.
Let’s first discuss some basics principles before we launch Atlas-Bid.
Atlas-Bid is a preferential bid entry program that allows you to customize your work schedule according to your individual likes and dislikes within the constraints of your seniority.
With Atlas-Bid, you can request items you want in your schedule and/or identify other elements to avoid. For example, for a given bid month, you can indicate the number of commutes and minimum number of days off between commutes. You can specify check in and check out times. You can list landing and layover airports to either avoid or award. You can specify average daily credits, days off, and specific trips, to name only a few options.
Atlas-Bid then compiles the following information to build schedules:
• your planned absences such as vacation, military leave, C-Q, etc.
• N-W-A trip details, and
• everyone else’s bids that are in your position.
When Atlas-Bid builds your schedule, it must follow the criteria agreed to by N-W-A and Alpa in the listed order of importance:
One: it must honor the F-A-Rs
Two: it must honor the pilot's contract
Three: it must construct complete schedules for a contractually designated number of pilots, and
Four: Honor pilot seniority
Therefore, one of the basic tenets of the program is that seniority does not necessarily entitle a pilot to the trips of his/her choice if those trips will force a more junior pilot to be below a certain line value. We’ll discuss the concepts of stacking, conditional pre-building, and withholding of short trips in a later presentation.
My name is John Doe and through a series of these presentations, I’ll show you how to bid and receive monthly schedules efficiently and effectively.
