Sam Woodfill Script
Characters: Army cook
Army cook: Best soldier I ever knew was also the hungriest! Now, most folk don’t link food with fightin’. But, Sam Woodfill did. I outta know. I’m an Army cook and Sam and me got to be best-uh friends. Me for cookin’ his bacon, and him fer savin’ mine!
See, Sam’s a Kentucky farmer and marksman who likes to eat regular. And, anybody what messes with his mealtime had best watch out.
Like that mornin’ in October, 1918. I was servin’ breakfast to our unit outside the town of Cunel, France, when the enemy spotted us and cut loose!
Mustard gas floated in. But, Sam didn’t put on his mask. He’s too busy. Sunlight flared on the muzzle of a German machine gun in some bushes ahead. Sam aimed, and picked off the gunners… one, two, three!
Then, he charged another magazine gun nest. Suddenly, a dozen Huns up and surrendered!
We quick took Sam to hospital for treatment from bein’ gassed. All time, he’s complainin’ ‘bout not havin’ his breakfast yet!
Next day, I brought him an apple pie I’d baked up special. He ate it in one sittin’ !
Ten weeks later, the war was over, Sam’s out of hospital, and he gets the Medal of Honor.
Yes, sirree…“Best soldier I ever knew?” Sam Woodfill- the Kentucky marksman who loved to eat.
