Project Parameters
Script Details
ADRA started work in this Pagoda back in 1999. They came with a program that taught the monks in training here the importance of good health, specifically the dangers that smoking have on our health. We liked the program so much that we decided to make our compound a smoke-free school. It has been very successful and, I believe, has had a very positive impact on the country. This is one of the largest pagodas in Cambodia and people come from all over the country to study here. When they come they not only learn about the dangers of smoking, but ADRA has a program that helps them to quit. Then, as the monks go back to their villages they also take with them the knowledge about the dangers of smoking and a program that can help people quit. We also did a national campaign with posters to encourage the people of Cambodia, not to offer monks cigarettes as a gift. This has got a lot of people asking their monks about the use of cigarettes and has had a big impact.
School Principal
Now that our school has become a smoke free zone, it is going to be a real help to our teachers and students. It will help to keep the environment clean and make a deliberate effort to promote healthy living to our students. We have found that many of the students are not only changing their own behaviors but also taking the message about smoking back to their homes and that the message is getting through to their parents as well.
Director General for Youth and Sports
ADRA has been supporting our efforts to reduce the use of tobacco among young people in Cambodia. They have conducted many workshops with my staff, educators and influential people in government. They have printed many materials for use in the schools and sponsored many activities throughout Phnom Penh. It has had a real positive effect. Over the last few years I have noticed a real decrease in smoking among the youth that I work with. I would like to say a special thanks to the people of Canada that have been such wonderful supporters of this important campaign in Cambodia, Thank-you.
