“Welcome to today’s training session on the NEW Process Safety Key Performance Indicators, or KPI. The purpose of this two-part webcast is to introduce you to the Process Safety KPI scorecard, and how to properly classify incidents as process safety within the computerized Global Incident Tracking System, or ITS.”

“As of October 2006, the Global Process Safety department began to report Process Safety KPIs as part of the monthly EH&S scorecard. We hope to:
• strive for continuous improvement in the process safety management of our sites
• pay more attention to these process safety activities, ultimately helping to guide the Global Process Safety organization in prioritizing our improvement efforts
• parallel a current industry effort in developing KPIs for process safety. It is hoped that this will be accomplished through the sharing of information and learnings from these types of incidents and help to address potential future problems.
The chemical industry has for years shared this information through the US American Chemistry Council (or ACC) and other similar international organizations. But nowhere have metrics been established to focus on PERFORMANCE. In response to several major incidents over the past years, the chemical industry had proposed several times to regulate and monitor itself rather than have governmental agencies do it. Unfortunately, OSHA PSM law in the US and Europe’s Seveso directive are proof that self-regulation isn’t always an option.”
“Despite major improvements in process safety through reductions in our corporate Fatal Accident Rate (or FAR) during the 1980’s, Air Products still recognizes that there is more to be done to strive for ‘world-class’ process safety performance. We are in the early stages of reporting Process Safety KPI’s, and will be looking to enhance our reporting and setting goals in the future.”
