Script Details
Asking for forgiveness is asking for mercy. At this point in the mass, we ask God’s mercy three times, echoing the priest. Asking three times shows sorrow for our sins, and symbolizes that we are praying to God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. As children often do, we too ask repeatedly for what we desire most: God’s mercy and love.
Many of the first Christian liturgies were in Greek. Even though Latin became the language of the Roman Catholic Mass before the year 500, the “Lord have Mercy” is still said in Greek, “Kyrie” Lord, “eleison” “have mercy,” “take pity.” This same prayer has been said by Christians for over 1500 years!
In a mysterious act of love, God forgives us and asks his Son to pay our debt. Jesus does so by dying on the Cross. What joy we feel that our debt has been paid! God sent his Son for us, and so we ask for mercy humbly, but confidently, for God’s love is infinitely greater than our failings. Second Script Option:
